Mauritania's presidential elections, scheduled for June 29, have echoes as far away as Morocco. In Laayoune, a committee has been set up to support the candidacy of incumbent President Mohamed Cheikh Ould El Ghazouani, who is seeking a second term, according to a media outlet in Nouakchott.

The initiative, launched by a Mauritanian investor in the city, is aimed not only at the Mauritanian community settled in the province, but above all at the thousands of Moroccans who have acquired Mauritanian citizenship thanks to a new law that came into force in August 2021.

The law allows Mauritanians to recover their original nationality. A measure taken by the government in Nouakchott to increase the population of the «Bidanes», who have been in power in the country since independence in 1960 and who are facing the rise of black Mauritanians.
