On Thursday, Spain's National Court rejected a request for urgent measures filed by the lawyers of Hamou Ali, a 30-year-old Sahrawi man, against the deportation decision issued against him by the Ministry of Interior.
According to Spanish media, Ali Hamou Ali, who had applied for international protection, is «deaf and has cancer». He has been detained in the asylum rejection hall at Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez Airport for over a week and now faces possible deportation to Morocco.
His lawyers, as quoted by the El Independiente newspaper last week, argued that Fernando Grande-Marlaska's ministry had ignored «sufficient evidence that would have made Ali a person in need of basic needs due to his incapacitating condition». Ali claims he «fled the occupied territories of Western Sahara due to increasing repression by Moroccan forces».
At least five young Sahrawis have avoided deportation to Morocco, issued by Fernando Grande-Marlaska's ministry. The latest case involves a Sahrawi with Moroccan nationality named Abdelsalam Abdallah Khalifa, who identifies as a «Polisario Front activist» and claims to be «persecuted by Morocco».
