Iran supports the Polisario. At the UN's 4th Committee session on Tuesday, Tehran's representative opened by condemning «global imperialism» and reaffirmed the UN's responsibility toward the people of Western Sahara and their «inalienable rights,» as outlined in relevant UN resolutions.

The diplomat urged a serious commitment to UN-mediated negotiations, in good faith and without preconditions, aligning with the UN Charter to ensure a just, lasting, and comprehensive political solution accepted by both parties.

Iran's statement was shared by the Polisario and Algerian media. Tehran has recognized the «SADR» since the early 1980s. It is worth noting that Morocco severed diplomatic ties with Iran on May 1, 2018.

In June 2023, former Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who tragically died in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024, had expressed Iran's willingness to reset relations with Morocco.
