Morocco to host third annual Flamenco World Conference

The Flamenco World Conference, organized by the Instituto Cervantes, will return to Morocco for the third consecutive year in November, according to a press release from the Embassy of Spain. The event, supported by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the European Union's Next Generation EU recovery plan, and in collaboration with the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, will feature 13 performances in 7 cities across Morocco, including Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Tangier, Tetouan, Marrakech, and Agadir.

This year's conference will celebrate female performers and innovative flamenco while staying true to the art form's centuries-old roots. Headliners include Soleá Morente, daughter of renowned flamenco singer Enrique Morente, and Rocío Márquez, a pioneering 21st-century flamenco artist. The all-female quintet Laboratoria will bring their groundbreaking approach to flamenco performance and gender roles. Dancer María Pagés, winner of the 2022 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, will present a documentary film and performance based on her creative process.

The conference will also feature documentaries, workshops, and lectures to introduce attendees to the world of contemporary flamenco. The events aim to position Morocco as a global hub for flamenco throughout November.
