The Central Council of Moroccans in Germany has sent an open letter to politicians and supporters of democracy, expressing its deep concern about the «unacceptable and offensive statements» made by an MP from «Alternative for Germany», a far-right and right-wing populist political party in Germany, during a session at the German Bundestag.
«These statements, which generally associate the Moroccan community with criminality and unemployment, are totally rejected and condemned», reads the letter. The council asserted that such statements are «not only unfounded», but are «a deliberate attempt to provoke prejudice, deepen societal divisions, and hinder positive developments in cultural coexistence in Germany».
The council confirmed that the Moroccan community has been an indispensable part of German society for over six decades, noting that it contributes significantly to the country's economic, social, and cultural development.
«Generalized and false statements, such as those made by members of the ‘Alternative for Germany’ party, ignore this fact and constitute a deliberate distortion that threatens social cohesion».
The council explained that «the defamatory and unjustified link between Moroccan origins and crime and unemployment is not only incorrect but also dangerous», stressing that «such statements fuel resentment, undermine integration efforts, and complicate intercultural dialogue, which is necessary for peaceful and harmonious coexistence in a pluralistic society».
Alternative for Germany MP Martin Sichert said during a discussion in the German Bundestag on cannabis legalization that what is known as the «Moroccan mafia», a criminal organization active in the Netherlands, consists mainly of Moroccans. He «suggested deporting the unemployed Moroccans».
German-Moroccan lawyer and politician of the Social Democratic Party Sanae Abdi expressed concern about the impact of this type of discourse on Morocco-German relations.
She stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of migration, sustainable energy, and economic development. Abdi insisted that the populist tone of the Alternative for Germany party undermines this important cooperation.
