As expected, on Tuesday, Morocco voted in favor of the United Nations moratorium on the death penalty. The kingdom was one of 131 states to sign the UN General Assembly resolution, adopted on December 17. The text was rejected by 32 votes, while 12 countries abstained.
Morocco's adherence to the moratorium was announced on December 9 in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi. «This major historic step is a continuation of the great progress made by Morocco in protecting and promoting the culture of human rights at both national and international levels», he told MPs.
This announcement was welcomed by human rights organizations and political parties. On the other hand, the PJD expressed its opposition to the abolition of the death penalty in Morocco.
