The Court of Appeals in El Jadida has reduced Moroccan YouTuber Ilyas El Maliki's sentence to two months suspended. Initially, El Malki faced a four-month prison sentence following complaints from several Amazigh activists.
El Malki is set to be released from El Jadida prison on Monday, having been detained since October 26. His detention followed orders from the public prosecution, which responded to the complaints by Amazigh activists and launched an investigation into the matter.
The arrest stemmed from statements El Malki made during a live broadcast, which included remarks perceived as offensive to Amazighs. This incident provoked significant reactions from human rights organizations and activists.
In a separate legal case, El Malki faced accusations from a coalition of women's and human rights organizations. They charged him with inciting hatred and discrimination through electronic means, among other allegations.
On Saturday, the Court of Appeal handed down a verdict of three months of suspended imprisonment. This was a revision of the initial sentence from the court of first instance, which had sentenced him to three months in prison and imposed a fine of 2,000 dirhams.
