French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, who has been on a working visit to Morocco since Sunday, praised the bilateral judicial cooperation, calling Morocco’s efficiency «a sign of friendship and professionalism».

In a press statement following a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdellatif Ouahbi, in Rabat on Monday, Darmanin specifically highlighted the recent arrest in Marrakech of dangerous suspects involved in the escape of French drug lord Mohamed Amra in France.

«We hope that the individuals arrested by Moroccan authorities will extradited to France in the coming days to face justice», said Gérald Darmanin. «Without Morocco's efforts in this case, and in previous cases, France would be less safe». «I’ve come here to express my gratitude for the important work we do together, to thank Mr. Minister and his administration for their actions», he added.

For his part, Abdellatif Ouahbi said that the meeting had addressed a wide range of issues, including the exchange of individuals wanted for crimes and the revision of agreements. «Our vision is aligned, and we discussed the extradition of individuals involved in serious crimes in France, as well as the social situation of our Moroccan citizens there, particularly regarding personal status», Ouahbi added.

The meeting also served as an opportunity to discuss aspects of the bilateral agreements, including the practice of lawyers. «We look forward to continued cooperation and harmonious work between our two countries», concluded Abdellatif Ouahbi.

Darmanin’s visit comes amid a strengthening of diplomatic and judicial ties between the two countries. Last February, two suspects involved in Amra's escape from prison were arrested in Marrakech at the request of French authorities.

In January, Morocco handed over Félix Bingui («Le Chat») to France following his arrest in the kingdom. Bingui is suspected of being the head of the Yoda clan, which controls drug trafficking in Marseille.
