The diplomatic truce between Mali and Algeria, initiated just a few weeks ago, has quickly unraveled. On Sunday, April 6, the Algerian government recalled its ambassador to Mali for consultations, according to sources contacted by Yabiladi. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
The move follows a recent claim by Algeria’s Ministry of Defense that it had shot down a Malian army drone—a claim the transitional government in Bamako has denied. In response, the Malian army carried out airstrikes near the Algerian border, targeting positions held by groups it labeled as «terrorists», allegedly backed by Algeria.
The ambassador’s recall marks the end of a brief lull in Algiers-Bamako relations. On February 28, Mali appointed Mohamed Amaga Dolo as its new ambassador to Algeria. Just weeks later, on March 27, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed satisfaction with the «normalization» of relations, saying in an interview with Algerian media: «Our Malian brothers have understood that Algeria is not just a neighbor, but a brother».
