South Korean shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is reportedly eyeing the establishment of a production base in Morocco.
According to industry sources cited by the Korean business magazine Business Korea on Tuesday, the company is seeking operating rights for the Casablanca shipyard.
HD Hyundai is considering entering a bid for the operating rights, currently being offered by Morocco’s National Ports Agency. If successful, the company would secure a 30-year lease on what is set to become Africa’s largest shipyard—spanning 210,000 m²—strategically located on the Atlantic coast.
The project aligns with Morocco’s ambition to acquire 100 merchant vessels by 2040, the same source added. HD Hyundai, already facing a 2.5-year order backlog across its global shipyards, would aim to absorb local demand and position itself to capture additional orders from the European shipping market. The move fits the group’s strategy of global expansion through operational partnerships rather than building new facilities from scratch.
