Laayoune hits record 49.2°C as chergui winds intensify Morocco heatwave

On August 9, 2025, Laayoune experienced a blistering 49.2°C, shattering its previous high of 47°C set in 2016. The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) confirmed on Monday that this temperature was both an «absolute and monthly record», largely due to the hot, dry chergui winds sweeping in from the Sahara. This extreme heat was further aggravated by specific weather patterns, including an anticyclone and desert depression, coupled with clear skies that intensified daytime heating.

This record-breaking heat wave coincides with DGM's ongoing warnings about persistent heatwaves since summer began, impacting central Morocco, some coastal regions, and the south. According to AFP, the meteorological authority reported on Sunday that temperatures were soaring 3 to 13°C above the seasonal norms. Notably, 19 cities across the country saw the mercury rise above 40°C.

The DGM also noted that 2024 has been Morocco's hottest year on record, with temperatures averaging 1.49°C higher than the 1991-2020 period. In the context of global warming, Agadir set a national record of 50.4°C on Friday, August 11, 2023, marking a significant milestone since the country began keeping meteorological records.

The previous record temperatures were 49.6°C, recorded in Marrakech in 2012 and Sidi Slimane in 2021.
