The Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad is set to host the exhibition «Sanctuary Kingdom» by Moroccan-American artist Rachid Bouhamidi. The event will run from October 2 to November 3, 2025, at the Espace Rivages in Rabat, with an opening reception scheduled for 6:30 PM on the inaugural day.

Rachid Bouhamidi draws profound inspiration from Henri Matisse, admiring how the French painter «simplified the pictorial language» and seamlessly integrated painting with decorative arts. Bouhamidi shares a deep connection with Matisse on themes such as the portrayal of women and the intricate relationship between nature and humanity.

His canvases pursue a delicate balance and purity, offering «a captivating visual experience with their chromatic richness». Bouhamidi «manipulates contrasting hues to capture light», creating «vibrant works full of energy» that convey powerful messages, particularly on women's issues.

«Women deserve respect in all societies, regardless of social class, race, religion, nationality, or status», Bouhamidi emphasized to the organizers. In his collection, women hold «a mythical place». «The models I draw from life often come from worlds where they are marginalized. I hope my work elevates the status of women and serves as a visual essay on femininity», he stated.

Born in Palm Springs, USA, in 1981, Rachid Bouhamidi has showcased his art across the United States, Morocco, and Europe. Raised in Southern California, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a master's in painting from Boston University.

This exhibition marks Bouhamidi's significant return to Morocco, a country he first visited as an adult. It represents more than just an artistic event; it is «the culmination of [his] desire, as both an individual and an artist, to reconnect with the land of [his] father». It is a «recognition of [his] belonging to Morocco».
