After months of investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice has formally charged John Bolton, former National Security Advisor under Donald Trump, with the alleged mishandling of classified information.

According to U.S. media, the indictment includes ten counts of illegal retention of classified material and eight counts of unauthorized transmission of information related to U.S. national defense. If convicted, Bolton faces up to ten years in prison for each count.

On August 22, FBI agents searched his home as part of an investigation into the alleged possession of confidential documents.

John Bolton is well known for his outspoken support of the Polisario Front. He was among the first senior American officials to publicly criticize Donald Trump’s decision on December 10, 2020, to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Relations between the two men have remained tense since Bolton’s dismissal in September 2019. In January, Trump reportedly went as far as to terminate the Secret Service protection detail assigned to his former advisor.
