The security authorities in Fez arrested a car driver on Tuesday evening who was responsible for the death of a 17-year-old boy after striking him during celebrations marking Morocco’s under-20 national team’s World Cup victory.

The suspect was apprehended near a hotel on Hassan II Street, a day after fleeing the scene of the fatal accident, which occurred in front of a café on Safrou Road in the Saiss district.

His arrest followed an investigation led by the judicial police, assisted by surveillance footage and intelligence from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), which enabled authorities to identify the driver and track his location, according to Assabah newspaper.

Investigations revealed that the driver, accompanied by other individuals, was driving at excessive speed and in the wrong direction when he struck the victim, who was attempting to cross the road at around 2:30 a.m. The teenager sustained severe injuries and later died after being transferred to the emergency unit at Hassan II University Hospital Center.

The victim, a high school student, had watched the final match with his family before going out to meet a friend. The two were heading toward the city center on a scooter but decided to turn back, moments before the speeding car hit him, ending his life in a tragic accident.
