The Mohammed VI University Hospital (CHU) in Agadir is set to open its doors soon, according to media reports. With a total investment exceeding 2.9 billion dirhams, the new hospital complex could reportedly begin operations on Tuesday, November 4, according to Médias24, which cites informed sources.
A high-level commission was expected to visit the site on Monday, November 3, to inspect the facilities before the official opening, says Le360 in another report.
The long-awaited Agadir CHU has a capacity of 867 beds and offers state-of-the-art medical services designed to meet the needs of both the city and the wider Souss-Massa region, home to nearly three million people.
The new CHU includes two main facilities: a Mother and Child Hospital, housing maternity, pediatrics, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, and pediatric surgery units, and a Specialties Hospital, featuring several medical and surgical departments, a modern emergency unit, a burns center, advanced laboratories, and robotic equipment.
The facility is also expected to ease the pressure on Hassan II Hospital and improve both the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery. The latter has been at the center of recent youth-led protests in Morocco. Anger erupted after eight women seeking C-sections at the hospital died in August, sparking a wave of demonstrations that later evolved into one of the main demands of the GenZ212 movement in Morocco, alongside calls for quality public education and an end to corruption.
