On Monday, July 13, Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) in Tan-Tan.
By 2030, AMTEC is set to include three key components: a multidomain training area, a drone academy, and an innovation and experimentation center, all based in Tan-Tan, according to a statement from AFRICOM.
«Morocco’s capacity to tackle these challenges, thanks to our robust infrastructure and skilled workforce, guarantees quick transition from concept to operational readiness, offering both Moroccan and American industries a dependable partner for collaborative innovation and exports», stated General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the FAR and Commander of the Southern Zone.
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, highlighted that «this partnership represents an exceptional opportunity for U.S. and African defense industries, alongside academic institutions, to experiment, innovate, and develop scalable solutions for emerging technologies».
Notably, during his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate in August 2025, General Anderson emphasized Morocco’s pivotal role in AFRICOM’s new strategic framework.
In early July, Generals Berrid and Anderson met in Luanda, Angola, at a conference of military leaders from 35 African nations, which this year focused on the theme: «Leveraging our strengths, advancing regional security for sustainable prosperity.»
