Borussia Mönchengladbach youngster Wael Mohya has reportedly decided to represent Morocco at senior international level, despite progressing through Germany's youth teams from the U16 to U18 levels, according to Germany's Bild.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, who made 15 Bundesliga appearances last season, reportedly turned down further call-ups from Germany's youth teams and is now expected to commit to the Atlas Lions, the report said.
Bild noted that the prospect of playing at the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal, likely influenced the decision, with the newspaper describing the tournament as a potential «dream» for the Moroccan-born talent.
Born in Germany to Moroccan parents, Mohya joined Borussia Mönchengladbach's academy in 2016 after starting out at SV Straelen and was promoted to the first team in 2025. Last season, he made 17 first-team appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals.
