Shin Bet delays Israel Morocco flight resumption despite ministry approval

The Israel Security Agency, Shin Bet, has not yet granted the required security clearance to resume flights between Israel and Morocco, despite the Israeli Ministry of Transport giving its approval to reopen the route, local media have reported.

Support for restoring flights followed a virtual meeting between the civil aviation authorities of both countries. A spokesperson for the Israeli airline Israir confirmed that the company submitted a formal request to Shin Bet several weeks ago to resume the Tel Aviv–Morocco route. However, no final approval has been issued, meaning flights cannot legally restart despite the Ministry of Transport’s optimistic statements.

The ministry stated that a meeting between the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority and its Moroccan counterpart helped establish a framework for reopening the route. Still, Israeli officials stressed that «resuming flights first requires resolving outstanding security issues».

Prior to the outbreak of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, Israeli airlines operated flights to both Marrakech and Casablanca, while Royal Air Maroc also ran flights to Israel.
