On Tuesday, Algeria firmly denied any ongoing negotiations with Morocco concerning a peace agreement. This rebuttal comes in response to comments made last month by U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who had forecasted a renewal of diplomatic ties between the two nations within two months, following a break since 2021.
During a press conference, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf expressed astonishment at the American official's remarks, stressing that «bilateral dialogue with Morocco is not on the agenda.» He clarified that Witkoff had «confused American initiatives related to Western Sahara with Algerian-Moroccan relations,» as reported by the Spanish news agency EFE.
Witkoff had previously stated in an interview with CBS that Washington was «currently working with Morocco and Algeria» and anticipated reaching a «peace agreement» within 60 days.
Meanwhile, on October 31, King Mohammed VI reiterated his invitation to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to engage in a «brotherly and sincere dialogue,» following a UN Security Council resolution that advocated for negotiations on Western Sahara based on Morocco's autonomy proposal.
