In France, authorities arrested 63 individuals across various cities during the celebrations following the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) final, where Morocco faced Senegal on Sunday in Rabat. According to BFM TV, the French Ministry of the Interior also reported that 14 police officers sustained injuries during the clashes.
«On January 18, after Senegal's victory in the AFCON final, spontaneous gatherings of supporters emerged. Initially festive, these gatherings led to minor public order disruptions, particularly in the Paris region, Lyon, and Avignon. Law enforcement intervened systematically, following directives from the Minister of the Interior», a source told the media.
«Following law enforcement intervention, calm was restored nationwide», the source added. Minister Laurent Nunez commended the efforts to maintain order. These operations unfolded as the AFCON 2025 final was fraught with tension, both on and off the field.
The match was briefly halted when the Lions of Teranga protested a penalty awarded to the Atlas Lions. Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, instructed his players to leave the field, though they later returned.
Meanwhile, violence broke out as supporters of the winning team attempted to storm the pitch, attacking officials in the process.
