Fez invests over 14 million dirhams to protect against flooding

More than 14.43 million dirhams have been earmarked to shield Fez from potential flooding caused by the Ain Smen river. Spearheaded by the Commune of Fez, this initiative will unfold over a year, focusing on a stretch that links the Bensouda R716 road to Oued Fez. The project entails the construction of rectangular or trapezoidal channels, culvert-style crossing structures, and access ramps for canal maintenance.

This effort joins a series of recent initiatives aimed at safeguarding the city from flood risks. In March, the Fez-Meknes Regional Council approved a partnership agreement to protect the Idrisside city from the Oued El Mehraz floods (phases one and two), with a budget of 108 million dirhams.

Last year, over 300 million dirhams were allocated for structural projects focused on flood protection and enhancing the city's wastewater management network.

Key among these projects is the construction of the main Oued Fez collector. The first phase involves building 4 km of sanitation galleries, costing 200 million dirhams. This infrastructure will divert nearly 90% of the wastewater currently running beneath the medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage site, safeguarding it from environmental and structural threats posed by the network.

Additionally, the construction of the Miyet and Himmer collectors is underway, spanning 8 km with a budget of 151 million dirhams. This project aims to bolster the liquid sanitation system in the city's southern region, strengthen existing branches, and alleviate pressure on current collectors.
