The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has firmly denied reports that a 20-year-old British tourist was arrested and detained in Marrakech, describing such claims as «false and unfounded».
According to a statement by DGSN this Tuesday, the individual was not placed in police custody but was instead subject to a judicial investigation for filming and publishing images of individuals, particularly minors, without their consent, in accordance with Moroccan law.
The intervention followed reports from citizens, after the man was seen recording and sharing videos in Jemaa el-Fna square showing people in vulnerable situations, most of them minors, without authorization and under the pretext of distributing aid.
Acting on instructions from the public prosecutor, police launched an investigation and seized the individual’s phone for forensic analysis to examine its digital content. The DGSN stressed that the person concerned benefited from all legal safeguards throughout the procedure and was referred to court while remaining at liberty, with a hearing scheduled in line with national law.
The statement was issued in response to claims reported by the Daily Mail, citing the man’s mother, alleging that he had been detained for several hours and prevented from contacting his family after filming himself distributing supplies to street children.
