The Senegalese government has welcomed the African Union Commission's decision to decline endorsement of Macky Sall's candidacy for the role of United Nations Secretary-General.
«The Permanent Mission wishes to clarify that the Senegalese government never supported this candidacy and was not involved in the initiative taken by the Burundian government,» stated the administration, led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, in a communiqué released on Friday, March 27. Dakar «takes this opportunity to reaffirm to the African Union Commission the assurances of its highest consideration».
This Friday, the African Union Commission reviewed «a draft decision related to the silence procedure» concerning Macky Sall's candidacy. The pan-African organization noted that «twenty (20) member states broke the silence regarding the adoption of the draft decision. Consequently, the draft decision concerning the candidacy of H.E. Macky Sall, former President of the Republic of Senegal, for the position of UN Secretary-General, was not adopted».
It is noteworthy that the African Union's rotating presidency, held by Burundi until February 2027, had proposed Macky Sall's name as a successor to the Portuguese António Guterres.
Macky Sall, who served as Senegal's President from 2012 to 2024 and led the African Union in 2022, has not received backing from the new authorities in Dakar. They accuse him of withholding information concerning the public debt.
During his presidency, the Senegalese Constitutional Council rejected the candidacy of the current Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko for the presidential election in February 2024, paving the way for Bassirou Diomaye Faye's election. Faye is the Secretary-General of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity, a left-wing party founded in 2014 by Ousmane Sonko.
