More than 95% of Morocco’s beach bathing waters met microbiological quality standards in 2025, marking a 7% increase compared to 2021, according to the national report on bathing water and beach sand quality presented Tuesday in Rabat.
Prepared under the National Program for Monitoring the Quality of Bathing Waters and Beach Sands (PNQEBSP), the report assessed 204 beaches (498 monitoring stations), up from 79 beaches in 2004.
Non-compliant sites accounted for just 4.72%, though further efforts are needed, including improving sanitation systems, tackling illicit discharges, strengthening infrastructure, and enhancing awareness campaigns.
Regarding sand quality, 64 beaches were monitored through sampling campaigns. Waste levels also declined significantly, with more than a 25% reduction in collected waste between 2021 and 2025.
Speaking at the event, Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, welcomed the progress but warned that environmental challenges persist. She noted that 80% of marine debris originates from land-based sources, with plastic accounting for over 86%.
She highlighted the importance of initiatives such as the Clean Beaches program and the Blue Flag label, developed in partnership with the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, while calling for stronger collective efforts.
The classification is based on statistical analysis of microbiological indicators over the 2022–2025 period, in line with national standards.
