The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, «supports and shares the concerns expressed by the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO)» concerning the Polisario’s rocket attack of 5 May on Smara.
The position was conveyed on Thursday during the daily press briefing by UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
«MINURSO expressed deep concern over incidents of firing in civilian areas and urged the parties to avoid any act that may jeopardize the ongoing political process», Dujarric said.
De Mistura, he added, «emphasizes that this is a time for dialogue and negotiations, not a time for military escalation». He further stressed that «such attacks underscore the urgent need to return to the ceasefire and negotiate a lasting, mutually acceptable political solution to this conflict».
The Polisario Front’s attack on Smara was also denounced by two permanent members of the UN Security Council. France said on Wednesday that the attack threatens regional stability and undermines the UN-led political process revived following the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797 in 2025.
The United States Mission to the United Nations likewise denounced the attack, stating that «the time to end this 50-year-old dispute is now».
The separatist front has claimed responsibility for the attack on Smara, which involved the launch of three projectiles that struck different parts of the city. The attack injured a woman, though no material damage was reported.
