Polish prosecutors have identified a Moroccan national as the suspect in the fatal stabbing of Polish soldier at the Belarus-Poland border in May 2024.
The District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw said in a press release Tuesday that the suspect allegedly stabbed the 21-year-old soldier through the border fence while he was on duty near Dubicze Cerkiewne. The soldier succumbed to his injuries on June 6, 2024, after spending several days in hospital.
Following a two-year investigation that included interviews with more than 140 witnesses in Poland and abroad, prosecutors formally charged the Moroccan with murder in July 2025 and issued both a national arrest warrant and a European Arrest Warrant.
Polish authorities say the suspect is currently in Belarus. An extradition request was submitted to Minsk in December 2025, but the procedure has yet to produce results. As a result, the investigation was suspended on May 22, 2026, due to what prosecutors described as a long-term procedural obstacle linked to the suspect's presence outside Poland.
The killing sparked outrage in Poland and led the government to further tighten security measures along its border with Belarus.
