Nabila Mounib named PSU candidate for Casablanca Anfa legislative race

As expected, the political bureau of the Unified Socialist Party (PSU) has designated Nabila Mounib as its lead candidate in Casablanca's Anfa constituency for the upcoming legislative elections. Under the party's bylaws, the political bureau has the final authority over candidate nominations.

The decision comes despite the PSU's local branch in Anfa having selected Abdullah Abaakil to head the party's list in the constituency. Mounib's nomination had nevertheless been widely anticipated, particularly following the agreement reached between the PSU and the Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD).

The agreement effectively cleared the way for her candidacy by ruling out potential competition from Fatima Tamni, an FGD lawmaker who had expressed her intention to run in Anfa. Mounib will now have to seek a direct mandate from voters. She previously suffered a heavy defeat in Casablanca's 2015 municipal elections.

In the September 8, 2021 legislative elections, Mounib entered the House of Representatives without contesting a constituency seat, winning a parliamentary mandate through the national women's list based on the votes obtained by PSU candidates across the country. At the time, she was the party's sole representative in Parliament.
