Algerian Interior Ministry has announced yesterday that it is allowing the 41 Syrian refugees stranded in the borders between Morocco to enter its territory, Reuters reports. Abdel Aziz Benali Cherif, the spokesperson of the Algerian Forreign Affairs ministry told APS on Thursday 1st of June that his country will host refugees after being bloced in Figuig since 17th o April.
«The representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Hamid Boukhari was received today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was informed about the decision», indicates the Algerian news agency.
Algeria has called the step it took «a humanitarian gesture» regarding the difficult situation that the refugees go through during the month of Ramada. In a communiqué, the country promises that it will host the group and provide the necessary care in order to «help them, if they agree, join their families in other countries».
O May 30th, The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees urged Morocco and Algeria to insure a «safe» passage for the Syrian refugees trapped in the Moroccan-Algerian borders in a report published on the agency's official website.
The humanitarian organization expressed its worries regarding the group of refugees asking «the two countries to urgently address humanitarian needs, facilitate access to these refugees and allow them admission to safety and/or reunification with their families».
For more than a month, refugees have been confronted with sand storms and snake attacks, which pushed them to put on fire their makeshift shelters to scare off reptiles.
