The White House presented on Monday, February 12th, the US fiscal 2019 budget proposal. Excluding the army, the budget proposes massive cuts, affecting defense and non-defense funding for government agencies, tax changes, and funding for social insurance and assistance programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamps, reports Vox.

Washington's financial contribution to peacekeeping operations is to be also affected by these cuts and the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), a peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara, is one of them.

Indeed, if Trump's proposal gets approved by the Congress, it would irreversibly lead to a reduction in the financing of the UN mission in the Sahara. The USD 18.4 million spent on Colin Stewart's services this year would drop to USD 8.4 million.

By 2018, the United States had already reduced its contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions to USD 600 million. As a result, the Minurso's budget was reduced by 6%; a small number compared to other UN missions.

Members' response to the budget proposed by the Trump administration will be known in the coming months. The fiscal year begins on September 30th.
