The European Union (EU) should develop its cooperation with Morocco to curb migratory flows on the western Mediterranean route, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, said Monday in Brussels.

«We have seen a 150% increase in migration flows on the western Mediterranean route this year, and we have decided to strengthen our actions to curb these flows, especially with Morocco and Mauritania», Mogherini pointed out at a press briefing following the EU Council of Foreign Ministers.

In this regard, the EU is putting in place new measures to strengthen cooperation with these two countries, she said, citing in particular funds that will make it possible to «manage together» migratory flows on the western Mediterranean route.

Mogherini also highlighted the EU's desire to strengthen cooperation in the area of migration with the UN, the African Union and the migrants’ countries of origin and transit, as well as to increase the budget allocated to Emergency Trust Fund for stability and addressing root causes of irregular migration and displaced persons in Africa (EUTF for Africa).

The EUTF for Africa aims to foster stability and to contribute to better migration management, including by addressing the root causes of destabilisation, forced displacement and irregular migration.
