Murder in Imlil : Moroccans pay tribute to the victims

Moroccans are paying tribute on social media to the two Scandinavian mountaineers who were found dead near Imlil with cuts to their necks. A sit-in will be held Saturday in Rabat near the Norwegian and Danish embassies to denounce the awful acts.

Three days after the bodies of two Scandinavian tourists were found dead near Imlil, the starting point for treks to Mount Toubkal, Moroccans took their anger and frustration to the internet to denounce the awful acts.

On social media, several Moroccan internet users presented their condolences to the families of the two mountaineers, Louisa Jespersen and her Norwegian friend Maren Ueland.

A viral message was posted on social media by several Moroccans, followed by a «sorry» and «rest in peace» hashtags. «As a Moroccan, I am deeply shocked about the incident and truly sorry for what happened in Morocco hope the suspect gets what they deserve, we do not tolerate such actions like this in our country, rest in peace we are sorry (sic)», wrote Moroccans on Facebook.

A similar message was massively shared by Moroccan internet users on Twitter, denouncing the «barbaric and horrible» acts.

A sit-in on Saturday

In addition to the messages shared online, the Moroccan Lawyers Club announced that they are organizing a sit-in on Saturday to support the families of the victims and pay tribute to them. A page was created on Facebook to announce the event which attracted several users.

The gathering is scheduled from 5 pm to 7 pm and is expected to take place in front of the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Rabat.

For the record, the bodies of the two Scandinavian women were discovered Monday, December the 17th, near Imlil with cuts to their necks. The Danish and Norwegian women, who went hiking on a Christmas vacation, were found dead inside their tent by French mountaineers who called the police afterwards.

The first suspect was arrested one day after the murder took place. According to a communiqué published Wednesday by the Public Prosecutor’s office, one of the suspects allegedly involved in the murder «belongs to a terrorist group».

On Thursday, the three other suspects allegedly involved in the murder were arrested in Marrakech and are currently investigated by the authorities to determine the reasons behind the murder.
