Sixty-eight percent of adults worldwide have confidence in their local police, according to a new poll conducted by American analytics and advisory company Gallup. Data compiled by Gallup’s 2019 Global Law and Order report includes also Morocco, which ranks 85th among 142 countries.
Measuring the progress countries are making or are not making toward achieving the United Nations’ sustainable development goal of «prompting just, peaceful and inclusive societies», the index grants the Kingdom a score of 74 out of 100 points.
Compared to the previous ranking, Morocco has seen its position and score in the index decrease. According to the 2018 Global Law and Order report, Morocco scored 81 points and ranked 56th in the world.
In addition to its lagging performance, Morocco is ranked 8th in Africa, positioned behind Egypt 8th, Rwanda 36th, Mauritius 47th, Algeria 65th, Burkina Faso 74th, Tanzania 76th and Ethiopia 77th. In the MENA region, Morocco ranks 8th behind the United Arab Emirates 3rd, Egypt 8th, Jordan 22nd, Saudi Arabia 35th, Iraq 59th, Algeria 65 and Lebanon 69th and ahead of Palestine 86th and Mauritania 132nd.

Regionally speaking, the North Africa and Middle East region scored 81 points in the 2018 Law and Order index set up by Gallup, gaining one point when compared to 2017. The region’s score is topped by that of East Asia, Southern Asia, Western Europe and US and Canada.
As for regions’ percentage of confidence in the police, the Middle East and North Africa region secured 67 points in 2018, losing one point when compared to the previous year. The MENA region is, however, ranked seventh in the world, topped by Western Europe, Southeast Asia, US and Canada, South Asia, East Asia and Eastern Europe.
To highlight the change in Morocco’s Law and Order performance, Gallup interviewed 1001 Moroccans between July 14 and August 3, 2018.
Gallup researchers conducted in general 152,000 interviews, asking only four questions : «In the city or area where you live, do you have confidence in the local police force ?, Do you feel safe walking along at night in the city or area where you live ?, Within the last 12 months have you had money or property stolen from you or another household member ?, Within the past 12 months, have you been assaulted or mugged ?».
The Global Law and Order ranking for 2018 was topped by Singapore 1st, Tajikistan 2nd, the United Arab Emirates 3rd, Norway 4th and Switzerland 5th. South Africa 138th, Liberia 139th, Gabon 140th, Venezuela 141st, and Afghanistan 142nd are at the bottom of the same list.
