Covid-19 : Confirmed cases reach 654 in Morocco

Five new people have recovered from the new coronavirus, while 52 new confirmed cases have been registered in Morocco since yesterday.

Morocco recorded 52 new confirmed coronavirus cases bringing the total number to 654 cases of Covid-19 infections in the Kingdom.

During a press briefing in Rabat, Mohamed Lyoubi, chief of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division at the Health Ministry said that 2,691  suspectedcases have tested negative for the virus.

He revealed that during the last 24 hours, one coronavirus-related death was recorded, bringing the number of deaths in the Kingdom to 39. He also reported that two additional Covid-patients have recovered, with the total number of recoveries reaching 29.

181 Covid-19 cases are located in the Casablanca-Settat region, 113 in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, 110 in Fès-Meknès, 115 in Marrakech-Safi, and 45 are in Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima. Lyoubi indicated that the region of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra recorded two coronavirus cases, adding that Dakhla-Oued Ed Dahab remains the only Moroccan region with no Covid-19 cases.

Casablanca has the highest number of confirmed cases

The city of Casablanca is home to the highest number of infections (169) followed by Marrakech (110 cases), Rabat (60) and Meknes (49).

Mohamed Lyoubi said that 55% of the people who tested positive for the virus were men while 45% were women, noting that the average age of the patients is 56 years old. He reported that the youngest Covid-19 patient in Morocco is a two-month old baby while the oldest is a 96 years-old person.

Regarding the health status of those infected, the numbers have not changed either: «74% of cases are mild while 14% are severe or critical», Lyoubi said.

As for those who recovered, Lyoubi said that the average age of the patients is 43.5 years. He reported that the youngest Covid-19 patient that recovered in Morocco is a nine-month old baby while the oldest is an 80 years-old person.

For the periods of recoveries, Lyoubi indicated that it took in Covid-19 patients in Morocco an average of 12 days to recover, adding that it went from 6 to 22 days for other cases that varied in terms of symptoms. Out of the recovered cases, 4 did not show severe symptoms, while 8 were in critical conditions before being able to defeat the virus.

5 of the recovered are in the Casabanca-Setta region, 7 in Rabat-Salé-Kenitra, 5 in Fez-Meknes, 4 in Marrakech-Safi, 1 in Beni Mellal-Khenifra, 1 in Souss-Massa and 1 in Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.

The health official stressed that in the coming days, the Ministry will communicate on the efficiency of the new protocol used in the treatment of Covid-19 patients : Chloroquine.
