The family of Ernesto Rey, a Spanish businessman who has been imprisoned in Rabat since 2017, urged Morocco to release him, explaining that his lawsuit is suspended due to the coronavirus crisis.

According to EFE, the family urged Morocco to take into consideration the health condition of the Spanish national, adding that he suffers from diabetes and asthma.

Ernesto Rey, owner of Procumar, a fish import company based in Algeciras (Cadiz), was arrested on March 23, 2017, during a visit to Morocco. A year earlier, Moroccan police had intercepted a shipment of hashish inside one of his trucks.

His case was pending an appeal, and the Cadiz businessman thus remained in prison.

«His health condition is very fragile», said a member of his family, recalling that he has reportedly been hospitalized three times since his arrest.
