121 new confirmed coronavirus cases recorded in Morocco, 2,685 in total

As of Saturday evening, Morocco has registered 121 new confirmed cases of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), bringing the total number of infections in the country to 2,685.

«Casablanca-Settat and Marrakech-Safi remain the regions with the highest number of infections (53%) followed by Fes-Meknes (14%), Tanger-Tetouan Al Hoceima (11%) as well as Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (10% ) the head of epidemiology and the fight against infectious diseases department at the Ministry of Health, Mohamed Lyoubi, said during a daily press briefing held Saturday.

The official stressed that the Guelmim-Oued Noun and Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra regions remain the only two regions that do not have, for the moment, any Covid-19 infections after all its confirmed cases recovered.

«In the past three days and until now, only one new case has been recorded in Casablanca, while no case has been recorded in Marrakech and Nador”, he added, stating, however, that «two new outbreaks have been discovered in Tangier, in an industrial unit (9 cases) and a household (9 cases)”.

Mohamed Lyoubi also clarified that 616 suspected cases were excluded during these 24 hours, while in total 11,004 cases tested negative for the virus. He added that out of 13,562 people who were in contact with confirmed cases in Morocco, 6,027 of them are quarantined and 1,331 have tested positive for the virus.

Between Friday and Saturday, Morocco also recorded two deaths, bringing the number of people who died from the virus to 137. The fatality rate, however, fell to 5.1%. A decrease explained by «an increase in asymptomatic or benign cases detected», the health official explains, recalling that the serious or critical cases treated represent only 4% of the cases, or 89 patients only.

As for recoveries, Morocco recorded 33 new cases between yesterday and today, bringing to 314 bringing to the number of people declared cured of Covid-19, a recovery rate which has now increased to 11.7%, concludes Mohamed Lyoubi.
