Long before the creation of the Algerian state on July 5, 1962, and that of the Polisario in Libya, Tangier hosted the first meeting of the Committee of 24 outside UN headquarters in New York in May 1962. This was followed by the inclusion of the Sahara issue on the agenda of the C24 in 1963, at the initiative of the Kingdom.
To free Tangier, seized by King Charles II of England, Moulay Ismail sent Ambassador Mohamed Ben Hadou to London. The latter became a popular figure in England and was invited to universities and honorable institutions.
