The US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs is expected to visit Morocco this week. This visit might give a hard time to some parties in the Kingdom, especially as Antonio Guterres’ report on Western Sahara reflected the US willingness to make a change on the human rights situation in the region.
In December, John Bolton said he was frustrated that the Western Sahara conflict «has not been resolved». In January, the US National Security Advisor did not comment on the Security Council’s review of the conflict.
After it threatened to seek the Court of Justice of the European Union to cancel the EU-Morocco agricultural agreement amended last week by the European Parliament, the Polisario Front sent a letter to the President of the UN Security Council.
At the end of the December 22nd meeting held at the UN General Assembly, Washington promised to scrutinize all UN peacekeeping missions. This examination is part of the UN's January programme.
The Polisario Front preferred to take note of the new Security Council resolution on Western Sahara. Morocco, on the other hand, welcomed resolution 2440.
