The Arab Lawyers Union (ALU) recently appointed Moroccan Bar President Mekkaoui Benaissa as Secretary General of the Union to replace Kuwaiti Nasser Al Kriwine.

The power transfer ceremony took place on Sunday at the Union's headquarters in Cairo.

It is an implementation of the conclusions of the emergency meeting by the ALU permanent bureau, held recently, and which had decided to withdraw its confidence in Al Kriwine.

The request for withdrawal of confidence was initiated by the Jordanian Lawyers Union. The permanent bureau of the Arab Lawyers Union approved by absolute majority this request (53 votes for out of a total of 73).

The ALU is a pan-Arab confederation of bar associations and law societies. It strives to develop the profession of lawyer in the Arabic countries to make it a true auxiliary of justice and works for the independence of the judiciary.
