Teacher unions reach agreement with government, secure salary raise

The government and the most representative education unions signed an agreement on Sunday in Rabat to improve teachers' salaries following a series of strikes that protested their wage situation.

The agreement was reached during a meeting led by the Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, and attended by the Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa, the Minister of Economic Inclusion, of small businesses, employment and skills, Younes Sekkouri, the Minister Delegate for the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, as well as representatives of the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), the General Union of Workers of Morocco (UGTM), the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) and the Democratic Federation of Labor (FDT).

The document agreed to give a net salary increase of 1,500 dh to all education sector employees, regardless of their current status. The raise will be distributed in two tranches, the first one to come into force in January 2024, and the second by January 2025.
