Nigerian Brigadier General appointed Deputy Force Commander of MINURSO

Nigerian Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho has been appointed the Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), according to a press release reported by Nigerian media on February 18th.

This marks the first time a Nigerian national holds such a high position within MINURSO. General Esho will replace Commodore Faustina Boakyewwa Anokye of the Ghana Navy.

Brigadier General Esho graduated from the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a master's degree in Strategic Studies.

Commenting on his appointment, he expressed deep gratitude for the support he has received. He also emphasized the importance of diversity in global peacekeeping missions, stating that representation is crucial for achieving meaningful and lasting change.
