The new premises of the Consulate General of France in Tangier were inaugurated on Thursday, marking a major milestone in the project to consolidate the services of the French Institute and the Consulate on the emblematic site of Place de France. The ceremony brought together the French Ambassador to Morocco, Christophe Lecourtier, the Wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Younes Tazi, the President of the Regional Council, Omar Moro, as well as elected officials, consulate representatives, and other personalities.
Located in the former building of the residence of the consuls general, which is 150 years old, the new consulate underwent significant rehabilitation work. This work preserved the exterior architecture, consolidated the structure, and restored exceptional furniture elements.
In his speech, Christophe Lecourtier praised this reorganization, which he described as a necessary response to the economic boom that the northern region has experienced since the 2000s. He also mentioned ongoing projects to expand the educational offerings of French institutions, notably by increasing their capacity to accommodate more students.
He emphasized that the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region hosts about 4,000 French nationals, nearly half of whom also hold Moroccan citizenship, with an annual demographic growth of 5%, a remarkable figure compared to other regions of the Kingdom.
According to the ambassador, «it was high time to adapt the 'House of the French' in Tangier to this new environment and to open the entire site to new perspectives». He added that the idea of bringing together the consulate and the French Institute aims to enhance the services provided to French residents while offering a cultural space open to Tangier residents and visitors. This project, in preparation since 2021, includes the future opening of a media library and a Campus France branch, scheduled for summer 2025.
