Morocco is set to launch its fifth-generation (5G) cellular technology, as announced by the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government, in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni. The announcement was made on Monday in Rabat, with the 5G rollout strategically timed ahead of the African Cup of Nations (CAN-2025) and the FIFA World Cup 2030.
The introduction of 5G technology aims to ensure that 25% of the Moroccan population is covered by 2026, with an ambitious target of 70% coverage by 2030. This rollout will prioritize full coverage in cities hosting the 2030 World Cup matches, according to the Minister's response during an oral question session in the House of Representatives, addressing the topic of «digital services in mountainous areas».
El Fallah Seghrouchni further revealed plans to equip 6,300 public administrative structures with fiber optics by 2026, alongside extending this technology to 5.6 million households by 2030. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure across the nation.
Highlighting the importance of digital services, the Minister stressed that they are a priority for the development of Morocco's telecommunications sector. She acknowledged the concerted efforts by various stakeholders in bolstering the sector's infrastructure.
Moreover, the government is actively supporting telecommunications operators through investment agreements. The Minister pointed out that investments in national digital transformation projects have already surpassed 8.4 billion dirhams in 2023, reflecting the government's dedication to driving technological progress.
