In 2023, Morocco recorded a total of 24,162 cases of divorce by mutual consent, according to Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi. Additionally, there were 341 cases of revocable divorce within the same period, out of a total of 249,089 registered marriage certificates.

Minister Ouahbi's remarks were delivered to the House of Representatives through a statement read by Mustapha Baitas, the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesman. Ouahbi underscored the Ministry of Justice's dedication to upholding human rights and the rule of law.

He highlighted a series of initiatives aimed at curbing the increase in divorce rates, including raising awareness about the importance of preparation for married life and exploring effective methods for establishing a family mediation system within family justice services. The efforts also involve enhancing the role of social assistance units in facilitating family mediation and reconciliation between spouses.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that the Family Code mandates an attempt at reconciliation between spouses. He pointed out the various institutions, entities, and individuals the judge may consult to assist in this reconciliation process.

«This is an essential procedure in family justice, which the legislator has entrusted to the judge as part of his or her responsibilities,» emphasized Ouahbi.
