Since September 2023, Morocco has been facing a severe measles outbreak, with nearly 25,000 suspected cases, including 6,300 confirmed infections and 120 deaths. The outbreak has spread beyond Morocco, with both France and Spain reporting imported cases.

In Spain, measles has become a growing concern for health authorities. The country recorded 107 confirmed cases in the first eight weeks of 2025, across eight active clusters in different regions. This marks a sharp increase compared to the same period in 2024, when only 15 cases were reported, according to Spanish media.

The largest outbreak is in Biscay, in the Basque Country, where 51 cases have been recorded since November 2024—44 of them in 2025 alone. Among those infected, 21 are healthcare workers.

Spanish health officials attribute the rise in cases to imported infections from countries experiencing widespread outbreaks, primarily Morocco and Romania. Morocco has recorded 120 measles-related deaths, while Romania has reported 21 fatalities since January 2024.

34% of confirmed cases in Spain this year are linked to imported infections, health authorities in Catalonia said.

According to the Carlos III Health Institute, as of February 16, Spain had identified 91 measles cases : 31 imported, 44 linked to those cases, and 16 under investigation. The most affected regions are: Basque Country (44 cases), Andalusia & Catalonia (17 cases each), Castilla-La Mancha & Melilla (7 cases each), and Ceuta (6 cases).

Other regions (Aragon, Madrid, Navarre, Murcia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands) reported one case each.

To contain the outbreak, Spain relies on a two-dose vaccination program: the first dose at 12 months and the second between ages 3 and 4. Health authorities have also introduced a new quadrivalent vaccine, recommended by the Spanish Pediatric Association, which provides protection against measles, rubella, mumps, and chickenpox.
