The Australian research institute, Economics and Peace, released its annual Global Terrorism Index 2025 report, which evaluates the impact of terrorist attacks in 163 countries based on incidents, deaths, injuries, and material losses.

The index classified Morocco as a «no impact» country, meaning it faces no terrorist threats, with a score of 0. This confirms that no terrorist incidents or impacts were recorded in Morocco during 2024, maintaining its status as a nation free from direct terrorist threats.

Morocco ranked 100th globally, sharing the last position with several other countries. The nations at the top of the list are those most affected by terrorism.

The Global Terrorism Index, established in 2012, relies on data from the Global Terrorism Database at the University of Maryland and tracks the evolution of terrorist attacks in the countries included in the report.

Morocco, along with four other Arab countries—Mauritania, Kuwait, Qatar, and Sudan—was among those that scored zero, indicating no terrorism-related threats.

The report noted a slight increase in terrorism impacts in the Middle East and North Africa during 2024. However, the situation varied across the region, with nine countries improving and seven deteriorating. Four countries in the region scored zero, showing no terrorist activity for at least five years.

In 2024, the number of terrorist incidents in the region slightly decreased from 666 in 2023 to 618, while the total number of deaths halved, from 2,083 in 2023 to 1,058 in 2024.

In North Africa, Algeria ranked 42nd globally, Tunisia 43rd, and Libya 53rd, all indicating low to very low terrorist threat levels.

Burkina Faso topped the list of the most affected countries, followed by Pakistan, Syria, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Somalia.

The report highlighted that terrorism remains a persistent global threat, with 2024 marking another year of operational shifts and evolving challenges as the geographic scope of terrorist activities expands.

The number of countries experiencing at least one terrorist incident rose from 58 to 66, the highest since 2018. For the first time in seven years, more countries saw deterioration in terrorism impact than improvement, with 45 countries reporting an increase, while 34 showed progress.
