Authorities in the city of Ceuta have announced the unofficial start of the Strait Crossing operation (Operation Marhaba) ahead of its official schedule, which is set from June 15 to September 15. This early move prepares for the anticipated increase in traffic coinciding with the celebration of Eid al-Adha on Saturday, June 7.

Preliminary measures include establishing a reverse route at the «Tarajal» crossing and halting construction in the «Almadraba» area to ensure smooth vehicle movement. This is particularly important as the communal Eid prayer will be held this year at Loma Colmenar, near the border strip, drawing thousands of worshippers, according to local media.

During a visit to the vehicle checkpoint at the ferry terminal, Christina Pérez, the government delegate in Ceuta, explained that these measures aim to reduce the impact of traffic congestion on the city’s daily life. She also highlighted ongoing coordination with Moroccan authorities to ensure smooth traffic flow at the Tarajal crossing.

Pérez stated that the current situation is «completely normal», with no increase in vehicle movements from the peninsula so far. However, she did not rule out the possibility of emergencies and highlighted the authorities' readiness to respond to any developments.

She noted that this year’s conditions are less favorable compared to previous years, citing higher temperatures and the operation coinciding with extensive construction work at the border crossing and port. Pérez stressed that the top priority remains preventing congestion to ensure unhindered passage for citizens and emergency services.

Regarding the ferry terminal construction, Pérez confirmed that work is progressing on schedule and that the new facilities will be ready after the summer, in the upcoming fall.

She concluded by noting that the current absence of school holidays might help reduce traveler flow during this first week, which is a positive factor in avoiding congestion—even though the full security and logistical operation will be activated by the end of the week.
