The Spanish People's Party (PP) has responded to Nizar Baraka’s recent appeal for support of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. «Our position on the Sahara is public and transparent, unlike the opaque decisions made by this government on the matter. We have always upheld the same stance, and we continue to do so today», said PP spokesperson Borja Sémper during a press conference on Monday, July 14.
The PP has long criticized Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s decision on March 18, 2022, to endorse Morocco’s autonomy proposal, set to be implemented in 2027.
Sémper emphasized that «our country’s foreign policy is determined independently—it is neither subordinate to nor influenced by other nations, whom we deeply respect». He added, «We define our positions based on the interests of the Spanish people and our national traditions, particularly when it comes to the Sahara issue».
This statement marks the PP’s first official response to the letter sent last week by Nizar Baraka, Secretary-General of Morocco’s Istiqlal Party, to PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo. In the letter, Baraka expressed «deep concern over the People's Party’s lack of clarity regarding the Moroccan Sahara, at a time when broad international support is consolidating around Morocco’s autonomy initiative under its sovereignty».
The Moroccan plan has garnered support from the United States and 22 European countries, including France and the United Kingdom, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, as well as numerous African, Arab, Latin American, and Asian nations.
At its most recent congress, held from July 4 to 6 in Madrid, the PP reaffirmed its support for «respect for international law and United Nations resolutions concerning Western Sahara», though without offering further specifics.
Notably, the Istiqlal Party, the People's Party, and Morocco’s National Rally of Independents (RNI), led by Aziz Akhannouch, are all members of the Centrist Democrat International.
