On Saturday, a significant agreement was inked in Tan-Tan between Karim Zidane, the Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Convergence, and the Evaluation of Public Policies, and Philip Jenkins, CEO of the American firm GPM Holding. This deal paves the way for the establishment of an industrial unit dedicated to polysilicon production in the region.
The project is set to attract an investment of 8 billion dirhams, generating 1,500 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect jobs. With an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons, a substantial 85% of this output is earmarked for export to international markets.
Designated as a strategic initiative by the National Investment Commission in February 2024, this endeavor aligns with Morocco's national strategy to advance renewable energies. It seeks to bolster the industrial value chains linked to solar panel component manufacturing, thereby reinforcing Morocco's position as a pivotal player in the global energy transition.
Additionally, an institutional cooperation protocol has been established between the ministry, the Wilaya of Guelmim-Oued Noun, the province of Tan-Tan, and GPM Holding. This agreement emphasizes regional support for the project, fostering local economic integration, developing an integrated industrial ecosystem, and training young talents in collaboration with educational institutions and specialized entities. The aim is to boost local employability and invigorate the regional industrial landscape.
