The Polisario has chosen to respond anonymously to the anger voiced on social media by the U.S. ambassador to Morocco following a meeting with the head of MINURSO.
According to a Sahrawi media outlet, «sources close to the Polisario Front believe these statements confirm Washington’s loss of neutrality and illustrate the failure of U.S.-led mediation efforts, insofar as the American position effectively rules out the option of a self-determination referendum.»
Another media outlet close to the Polisario said that «the statements by the new U.S. ambassador in Rabat, as well as his increasingly clear alignment with Morocco’s official narrative, show that Washington has abandoned any appearance of neutrality on the Western Sahara issue.»
U.S. Ambassador Duke Buchan initially recalled that «the Polisario's recent violence drew resounding international condemnation and their continued refusal to engage seriously on the future of the Sahrawi people threatens progress».
Even more directly, the American diplomat added: «The U.S. remains committed to peace through Morocco's Autonomy Proposal - but peace requires partners willing to negotiate towards a brighter future».
As a reminder, the Polisario’s «foreign minister» told the Algerian press on April 10 that «the Trump administration is the first to make a genuine and commendable effort to bring viewpoints closer together and organize rounds of direct negotiations between the two parties, in accordance with United Nations resolutions.»
He had also described the U.S. initiative as an «important development» in the process aimed at resolving the Western Sahara issue.
Those remarks were made before the April 28 talks in Algiers between the U.S. State Department’s second-ranking official, Christopher Landau, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
