GNV inaugurated its new vessel, GNV Aurora, in Tangier on Monday evening, adding the ship to its fleet serving the maritime route between the Port of Tanger Med and the Italian city of Genoa. The company said the launch reflects its strategic commitment to the Moroccan market and to strengthening maritime links between Morocco and Europe.
The vessel is part of a fleet renewal program running through 2030 and backed by investments of around €1.3 billion. GNV Aurora will operate alongside GNV Virgo, both powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), in line with the company’s transition toward more sustainable maritime transport.
Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh said the deployment of the two vessels ahead of Operation Marhaba 2026 would help expand maritime transport capacity and improve the quality of services available to passengers.
Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor noted that Italy has become Morocco’s fifth-largest tourism market, with more than one million Italian visitors travelling to the Kingdom in 2025. She added that around 15% of them arrived by sea.
Matteo Catani, CEO of GNV, said the new vessel reflects the company’s commitment to investing in technologies that combine safety, environmental sustainability, operational efficiency and a high-quality travel experience. He added that Morocco now occupies an increasingly important place in the company’s development strategy across the Mediterranean.
GNV Aurora entered service on June 1, while GNV Virgo is scheduled to begin operations on July 1. Both vessels will operate on the route linking Tanger Med, Barcelona and Genoa, further strengthening maritime connectivity between Morocco, Spain and Italy ahead of the summer travel season.
